What are Sea Beans and Why Should I Eat Them?
First off…what are sea beans you ask? Well, they are crunchy, salty and delicious little plants that I personally find very tasty!! They are yummy to munch on all on their own but are also a great substitute for lettuce in wraps or sandwiches, add some extra flavour to salads and soups and really pair well with any kind of sprout or sautéed with some garlic and olive oil!🌱
Also called Salicornia, Sea Beans grow in bushes by the ocean and are a natural diuretic, immune system booster and intestinal purifier, along with being a good source of vitamins A,B,C and D. In fact it is rumoured that sailors would use them for these medicinal properties on long trips. They are also high in calcium, iodine AND IRON (so all of my fellow anemics should give them a try😀)!
The only downside to Sea Beans is that they are seasonal. Here in #yeg I only see them around in June and July….. I get mine at the #104stmarket at the Mona food vendor along with some of their delicious mushrooms🍄!
